Sephora’s Star Ratings Make Me Go Hmmmmmmmmmmm…

Do you look at how many stars a product has on Sephora.com before you order? Me too. I always read the reviews before I purchase something sight unseen, which let’s get real, quite a few things aren’t available in store here in Canada.

I’ve talked about this before, but it’s gotten worse! Have you noticed that pretty much EVERY PRODUCT on the Canadian site(can’t speak for the USA one, but I imagine it’s the same) has a 4 or 5 star rating now??!! Go ahead, take a look. Here, click here and take a look at the New Makeup section. Right? If you do find something with 3 or less stars it’s pretty rare. I think on that whole page there are only 2 or 3 things. WTF is going on?

It seems that Sephora has been taking down any negative comments/reviews off of their site. Or they have some kind of filter set and if you use certain words, a review gets rejected-which is something they seem to be using as an excuse, if you start looking into this.

Also, have you taken back something recently? I did. Yesterday. And wow, it wasn’t as easy as it was in the past.

At the beginning of the month, I bought this Dr. Jart Cicapair Tiger Grass Night Mask Set. I used two packets, once a week, and both times it caused breakouts. So, I took it back yesterday. The cashier was counting and counting how many were left, even though I told her I used two of them. She looked confused, like she couldn’t count properly which was weird too.

I also took back this sister product:

And the same extreme level of examination was done. She opened up the box, took out the dropper and kept staring at it. She even called a manager, who watched her examine both products before deciding I could get my money back.

It was the weirdest return I’ve ever gone through at Sephora that’s for sure. I do think the cashier was new, so that could be why she was so into examining everything. The manager also told me that next time, I should have an in store facial so that I could try the products before buying them. Yeah, ok? But a sample to take HOME would be more beneficial than that, and as the masks are in single use packets, I DOUBT they’d have given me a pack to take home. That and IF the product was in store, which it was not. So, a facial was not the answer.

So, here’s my point:

If you’re gonna be stricter with returns, but you don’t have ALL of the products in store to TRY or be able to sample, then you SHOULDN’T be screwing with the reviews to make every product seem fantastic? RIGHT SEPHORA?

I have another product to take back that I ordered, a Pat McGrath Lipstick which of course, has 5 stars and everyone has been raving about. I hate it. It emphasizes every lip line and is so drying. Again, they’re not in any of the Sephoras around me, so if I get hassled again? I’m going to let them have it. Like dudes, I’m VIB Rouge, and you don’t get there by taking products back if ya know what I mean. But lately? I seem to be taking things back more because of what’s been going on. Have you been noticing the same things as I have?

    OMG, I’ve noticed them being weird about returns too, in the last 6-9 months anyways. I’ve returned unopened brand new stuff recently that I’ve changed my mind about or saw reviews and they weren’t good, and they OPEN the package and product to make sure it’s not used, even though I’ve told them it’s never been opened. I’ve definitely stopped buying as much as I used to there.

    1. This was the first weird return experience I’ve had. Made me feel like I was doing something wrong! Like Jesus, if you don’t want us to return things, then don’t. I kind of think they might be headed that way soon. In Canada at least.

  2. I have noticed the review on Sephoras sites are mainly super positive, which is just annoying for us as consumers. The positive thing is, that you can return stuff back if you don’t like it. Where I live you can’t return anything back, unless it’s brand new. Even if I’ve opened the box, but never used it, I can’t return it :/

    1. It’s annoying for sure! I want to hear everything-the good and the bad-about a product. And yeah, here in Canada, other retailers don’t let you take back opened products either, and part of me is thinking that Sephora want to do that soon here too.

    I received a free sample from a sample site, in return I had review the sample. I posted my review (2 stars out if five) . Was really honest about why the product was not a fit for me. However, no matter how many times I tied to submit that review , it was considered unacceptable. So I put 4 stars with my same review and…. To my surprise it was accepted.
    That experience has really turned me off reviewing items. I enjoy getting free stuff but if they are not going to allow me to be honest, then no thanks

    Whoa, it’s not just me then? I returned a couple things once and was a little insulted by the level of inspection the SA used to ensure I was returning product and not empty bottles. I can’t remember the products I got, but it was definitely weird. I tried to see it from their perspective – holy cow it’s a sad world if people are buying products, using them up and then trying to return them EMPTY in their packages. But it still felt a little like I was guilty until proved innocent. And exactly – if they don’t have the product for purchase in-store, then they shouldn’t give you the hairy eyeball for returning it if it doesn’t work. You’d think a review on their website would be unbiased considering the variety of brands they carry. Hmmmm, that’s sorta like Shoppers’ Glow magazine which suspiciously had raves for every product they talked about that also happened to be in the store!! I CALL BS!!!

    1. That’s exactly how I felt too! That I was a criminal! And yeah, I get that some people might totally use something up and try to return it, but the stuff I was returning was quite obviously FULL since I only tried them twice. Like the box of masks you should see was FULL. And magazines-never trust them man. That’s why blogs started-that’s why I started blogging. But now, a lot go blogs are just like those mags and only review things they like, which is not helpful at all.
